71 Why did William Win the Battle of Hastings?

“William was able to win the Battle of Hastings because of the soldiers that he had available”.

How far do you agree with this?

Your Task
Is to post an 'IDEA' that helps to argue Either for or against this question.

IDEA
I - Identify a reason why William won
D - Describe this using facts and evidence
E - Explain how it helped William to win the war.
A - Assess if this agrees with the question or not. Also try to argue how important this was for winning the battle

  1. I William won because of his allies not of his own forces
D 761 ships were donated by his allies without the account of his own
E Without the extra ships he couldn't have brought as many troops as he had
A This is against as it says why his forces got there not why they won because of them this is significant as without the extra troops they didn't have enough troops to outnumber

  2. Thanks Morgan - please consider the following in order to improve:

I - your point seems to be specifically about resource and ships. Make this more clear at the begging - avoid using the word allies at this stage.
D - Now you could describe how he was able to get these ships and how many he had. You could mention the donations from his allies here.
E - You should also consider how he received men from his allies too, not just ships.
A- You could use this point to assess why the numerical advantage was important at Hastings - perhaps you could consider the obstacles that the Normans had to overcome, how they were fighting away from their own country and perhaps how the numerical advantage was used to win the battle in the end.

  4. I a vast amount of sips and resources were donated
D 761 ships were donated by his allies without the account of his own
E Without the extra ships he couldn't have brought as many troops as he had
A This is against as it says why his forces got there not why they won because of them this is significant as without the extra troops they didn't have enough troops to outnumber

  5. I- The trick they played on the Anglo Saxons.
D- William hid and pretended to be dead, the fyrd assumed they had won and ran down the hill.
E- When the fyrd ran down the hill they quickly became vulnerable to the horsemen. The shield wall was also broken greatly so the arrow rain could do it's deadly job.
A- This certainly did help William win, without it he probably had absolutely no chance and would've give up and gone home before breaking the famous defense: the Anglo Saxon shield wall.

    The account name is irrelevant...

  7. I: Williams vast amount of soldiers.
D: He had more than the Norman soldiers on his side, he also had allies and more fully trained soldiers rather than Angelo Saxon fierds.
E: His allies brought extra men and weaponry to the Normans. Also, possibly, more advanced warfare.
A: This is for because of the amount of soldiers, the Normans had an overpowering advantage over the Angel o Saxons, outnumbering them.

  11. I – Norman horsebacks fighting in the battle.

D- These were very powerful troops in battle and could take out multiple troops at once by charging at them. They used a spear and charged at the Anglo Saxon troops. Their horses were trained to go at high speeds and probably could take a few hits.

E – These troops weren’t that great in the Battle of Hastings. Chargers ran all the way up the hill (thus leaving them vulnerable) and made their way to the shield wall. Once they reached, they didn’t really do much. Obviously they managed to take down the odd troop, but didn’t take down much of the, what seemed invincible, shield wall. This means that it could have been a great distraction but the Normans didn’t figure that out.

A – This fact is against the Normans. This could’ve been a vital point in the battle if the Normans used the ‘flank’ trick.

  13. Faking Williams death
Lure the enemy down the hill
It would be hard to go up hill to win the battle as the Saxons use shield walls
Against because its about William faking his Death

  14. I The abundance of men he had.
D Altogether, there were an estimation of 4500 foot soldier, 1700 archers and 2400 men on cavalry.
E Because it didn't really matter if they had lost a couple of me, they had more than 7000 men at hand.
A They outnumbered the Anglo Saxons with all the men he had available which soon allowed the Normans to circle round.

  15. I he used his men wiser than Harold
D he set each attack into a separate phase
E once he launched his first attack he basically said hit me with your best shot and teased him down
A this is against as this is more about strategy then combat overall this did help as this brought them down the hill

  16. Thanks Jay

To improve your explanation you should say how the Anglo-Saxons struggled to deal with the vast number of troops. Why was it such a problem for them? What did having large numbers allow the Normans to do?

  17. I-William had more soldiers.
D- Harold had lost some of his because of Stamford Bridge.
E-Because he had less men and most were tired it was easier to kill them.
A- This helped William win the battle, without Harold having enough men to fight he may have won

  18. I-William won because he had more soldiers.
D-Harold had lost many of his men at Stamford bridge.
E- Harold's men would have been tired because they would have needed to fight the Vikings than run to Senlac hill.
A-This helped William because Harold's men were weak and tired ton fight more and more Normans

  19. I William won with the different types of soldiers he had at disposal
D At his disposal he had maximum of 15,000 troops 7,000 foot soldiers 6,000 cavalry and 2,000 archers this means he had a varied choice of attack
E with the different offensive options he was able to plan his attacks into waves hoping one would lure them Anglo Saxons down the hill
A this was significant as if not for the extra attack power he may have never lured them off the hill

    ReplyDelete
  20. I they were taken by surprise and were exhausted
D this means they had barely any energy left
E they Anglo Saxons were already outnumbered being weaker only made it worse
A this is against as it has nothing about the Norman army to do with it

    ReplyDelete
  21. I he had double the soldiers
D this allowed him a huge advantage in man power as 2-1
E which meant the troops had lost fear of losing after seeing the odds
A this is for as this is all about the strength in numbers this is significant as without the double troops the forces would have lost faith and not have had the will power

  22. I= Norman Archers,
A=That they would fire it to soften the opponent up,
D=That the Anglo Saxons had little troops and the archers were powerful enough
E=It is said that an archer killed Harold Godwinson

    ReplyDelete
  23. I= they played a trick on the Anglo Saxon,
D= That the were trying to trick them into thinking that they were retreating so the Anglo Saxon ran after them,
E=This helped because they ran out of breath running down the hill,
A=This is important because it was the end of the war of Hastings

    ReplyDelete
  24. I=The hill ,
D=That the Normans would of gotten tired after running up the hill so they would of gotten killed,
E=It helped them because they didn't go up they lured the Anglo Saxons to them,
A=The Anglo Saxons were forced to go down the hill because there was march on one side and woodland on the other

    ReplyDelete
  25. I=The abundance of men he had
D=altogether the Normans had over 8,300
E=It didn't matter if some of his men died because he had 8,300 at his will
A= As the they had plenty of men they out number the Anglo Saxons easily

  26. I-The Normans spread the rumour that William was dead.
D-This lured the Anglo-Saxons off the hill breaking their shield wall.
E-For this reason the Normans were able to surround them.
A-This is against and what I believe to be the most significant reason the Normans won.

  28. I-William's army was much better than Harold's.
D-William had 7500 well trained soldiers but Harold only had 4500 fyrds (villagers picked up along the way) and 500 well trained soldiers.
E-The knights and horses were useful when they needed to get around the Anglo-Saxons to surround them and the archers were useful after the Anglo-Saxons broke the shield wall.
This is for and quite significant to the Normans' win.

  29. I-William started the battle much sooner than Harold expected.
D-This gave William the element of surprise and time to prepare.
E-The Normans had time to think of their strategy of tricking the Anglo-Saxons into making their way down Secal hill and breaking the shield wall.
A-This argument is against the statement and very significant because without their strategy the Normans wouldn't have won.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I-William won because of his archers.
D-Most people believe that Harold was shot in the head with an arrow.
E-If Harold really was shot with an arrow, if William had no archers then Harold might not have been killed in the first place.
A-This is for the statement and only slightly significant as Harold was already weak.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I- Williams took the Angelo Saxons by surprise
D-The Angelo Saxons thought William will take longer to get to Britain
E-Harold sent all his soldiers to fight Harold Hardrada and not leave some for when William comes
A- This is against the statement because if they came when Harold expected them to come they would have lost

    ReplyDelete
  32. I- William had allies so his soldiers would have had back up
D- William was donated 761 ships and some thousand men to fight
E-Without the ships he wouldn't be able to as many soldier and without the men he would have had no as many soldiers to win
A-This is against the statement because its about the allies

    ReplyDelete
  33. I-William had different soldiers at his command
D-William had many of his soldiers on horses while Harold's army was made mostly of fyrds (Villagers picked up on the way)
E-This helped William because the fyrds would have been easier to kill
A- This is for the statement because its about Williams soldiers

  36. I-Because of his combined force of archers and cavalry, he was able to break Harolds shield wall
D-Harold thought that he had a better prowess of men even though he didn't have different types of men. William however, had a team consisted on archers, soldiers on horses and foot soldiers
E-It gave him the upper hand because of the stronger and more dangerous men that he had compared to Harold with just foot soldiers. As well as Harold being at the top of the hill firing down where as William was at the base firing upwards.
A-It was very important because of how William had tough soldiers compared to Harold with weak soldiers. this does agree with the question.

  37. I-Harold Godwinson had fought the battle of Stamford bridge whilst waiting for William the conqueror to arrive, tiring himself out.
D-Harold fought the battle of Stamford bridge on the 25th September as William set sail on the 27th of September because of the wind changing to his advantage.
E-For 2 weeks he had time to set himself up without anyone to oppose him, giving him chance to be prepared.
A-This was an important part of the battle because of how much time William had to think of tactics and get prepared. It doesn't agree with the question.
